A lawyer's time is his/her stock in trade. Clients have higher expectations than in the past for how billing is handled by attorneys. Traditional time and rate billing is changing. There are modified billing models that clients have adopted that alter how attorneys manage time at work and how various matters are handled.
This is a general guide with tips and pointers to proper billing and effective capture of time. Mr. Bovarnick will discuss issues involving client expectations in billing, such as proper descriptions of tasks performed, time allocation for the task and use of the billing invoice to track the file's development and progression. Mr. Bovarnick will discuss the perils of batch billing, without proper descriptions and how it can lead to questions about invoices.
Finally, Mr. Bovarnick will discuss proper division of labor between paralegals and attorneys and how that is reflected in billing invoices.
