Attend any trial advocacy course and you will be instructed that storytelling is the most effective form of persuasion. Books and treatises devoted to the art and practice of persuasion similarly trumpet the virtues of storytelling. The ability to tell a convincing and persuasive story may be the advocate's most important skill. Yet, law school and the practice of law provide little training or opportunity to hone this essential skill. Lawyers learn to think, write, and speak in logical and orderly sentences that eschew narrative flourishes. But everyone loves a good story -- especially juries.

When it comes to storytelling a complex case, the lawyer must think like a screenwriter. But trial counsel must also think like a film director. A great narrative needs great visuals. The story must be complimented and reinforced by effective visuals -- graphics that capture the essence of the story, drive home essential evidentiary points, and change intellectual and emotional perspectives. In this seminar we will explore the elements of effective advocacy through good storytelling and complimentary visuals. We will discuss the strategies and ethics of planning and executing a compelling and persuasive story on behalf of your client.
