Residential domestic violence program staff, please join this Youth Advocacy Caucus meeting to lift your educational advocacy for youth and parents residing in shelters or hotels. This event will focus on federal mandates of the McKinney-Vento Act. Participants will learn the benefits of engaging with McKinney-Vento liaisons at local school districts to aid students in their educational journey.

Case managers and youth advocates alike will discover ways to assist parents and youth in continuing schooling while residing in shelter. When children are “deemed homeless” while living in shelters, hotels, doubling-up or are unaccompanied minors, they are eligible for services such as transportation, help with books, and other ways that might serve to promote their educational success. Participants will also explore post-secondary education information.

Presenters: Karen Rice, Senior Program Manager of Education InitiativesSchoolHouse Connection; Susannah Wayland, McKinney-Vento Coordinator, Ohio Department of Education
