In 1830, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Labouré in three apparitions. During the third apparition, Our Lady was standing on a globe, crushing the head of a serpent under her feet with many rays of light streaming from rings on her fingers. She explained that the rays symbolize the graces that she obtains for those who ask for them. The Virgin Mary asked St. Catherine to have a medal struck with this image on the front and the aforementioned inscription around the image. The medal was originally called the Medal of the Immaculate Conception; however, because of the many answered prayers, conversions and cures, after seven years it became known as the “Miraculous Medal.”
Miracles attributed to Our Lady’s intercession through the Miraculous Medal include the conversion of a young Jewish banker, Alphonse Ratisbonne. After accepting a challenge to wear the medal and to pray the Memorare, he had a vision of the Virgin Mary, an extraordinary conversion to the Faith, and was ordained to the sacred priesthood in 1847.
The promise attached to the medal is that all who wear this medal will receive great graces. Graces will abound for those who wear it with confidence.
