Collections Care Training 2017

The Collections Care Training programs are for librarians, archivists, curators, collections managers, stewards of historic house museums, records managers, and other staff who have responsibility for cultural collections. 

Protective Enclosures and Storage for Rolled Paper

Date: Thursday, September 7, 2017

To ensure long-term collections preservation, it is crucial to use proper storage systems and materials, and provide a stable environment with adequate space, furniture, and security. In this hands-on workshop, participants learn how to make simple housings for the storage of blueprints, drawings, artwork, or rolled documents. A selection of storage materials is reviewed.

Care and Preservation of Paintings

Date: Tuesday, October 3, 2017

Historic collections frequently contain paintings and other framed artwork. This workshop gives an overview on how to care for this type of collection, which requires unique storage and handling considerations. The session guides participants in preservation best practices, provides recommendations for moving and un-framing artwork, identifies conservation concerns, and instructs when to contact a professional conservator.

Care of Paper: Techniques and Materials for Handling and Transport

Date: Tuesday, November 14, 2017

This workshop addresses the safe handling of paper artifacts, including books and oversized objects, and basic design and labeling of protective enclosures for transport. Discussion includes how to prepare work areas, best practices for moving various types of artifacts, selecting preservation quality supplies and tools, and identifying potential conservation concerns. Participants gain hands-on experience and have an opportunity to sample materials.

The Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) is a nonprofit conservation facility specializing in the treatment of works on paper, photographs, and books through conservation and state-of-the-art digital imaging services. Founded in 1977, CCAHA serves nonprofit cultural institutions, private individuals, and other collecting organizations. CCAHA’s preservation services staff present educational programs, conduct preservation assessments, and develop emergency preparedness plans. CCAHA also offers fellowships, fundraising support, and disaster assistance.
