Great Books In Wine Country 2012 Sunday, October 7

You are invited to join us for Great Books in Wine Country 2012 in Calistoga for a book discussion in the morning and viewing the film made from the book in the afternoon followed by a short wine and cheese tasting.  This year's novel is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and we will watch the film of the same name.

Our discussion of the novel will begin at 10:00 am so try to arrive by 9:30 am Huck Finn Novelto get settled.  You may arrive as early as 9:00 am when we will have coffee, tea, juice, and some breakfast munchies available.  At noon you will be on your own for lunch in Calistoga which has many excellent eating places within walking distance of our meeting place.  We will show the film at 1:30 pm with a short discussion afterwards and then have a wine and cheese tasting before sending you on your way between 4:00 and 5:00 pm.

If you plan on staying overnight, accommodations can be hard to find around Calistoge at harvest time so you might consider Napa or Santa Rosa which are both less than an hour away.

I think The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the Great American Novel, if there is one.  We will use the Norton Critical Edition (ISBN 0393966402) for our discussion.  This edition contains a wealth of supplemental and worthwhile information, but we will discuss only the novel itself.  We can supply the novel, at cost, for $13.00 and it will arrive at your address within two days of your online registration.  Just indicate you want us to supply the novel when you register.

Huck Finn FilmThe film we will view is the 1939 version starring Mickey Rooney as Huck Finn.  Of all the films made of Huck Finn this one is probably truest to the original story except for the Hollywood style, race to the rescue conclusion. Toning down his usual firecracker personality, Rooney's river-boy Huck is a fun-loving, superstitious kid who can't give up his free-and-easy life of fishing and smoking, despite the best efforts of his kindly guardians.

The cost for this event is $30.00 plus the cost of the book if you wish to order it.  You may pay by check, your PayPal account, or credit card (Visa or Mastercard thru PayPal.)  Just click below on the “Register Now” button.

This registration is for Sunday, October 7, 2012 only.
