NUSL Denise Carty-Bennia Award Reception | Thursday, May 25, 2017

Please join us for this year's Denise Carty Bennia Memorial Bar Award Ceremony and Reception, which will be held on Thursday, May 25th, 2017 from 4:00 to 5:15 p.m. in the Moot Court Room, located at 65 Forsyth Street. Beverages and delectable hors d'oeuvres will be served.

This year's program is graciously sponsored by Sherin and Lodgen

Professor Denise Carty-Bennia was a highly successful attorney and tireless educator, advisor, mentor, and friend to countless Northeastern law students. She was dedicated to the pursuit of academic excellence and the expansion of opportunities for people of color. Professor Carty-Bennia's untimely death in 1990 created a void for many who knew her and her work.

Each year, as the applications for this award are reviewed, it is inspiring to see that so many Northeastern law students have dedicated themselves to improving the social and political issues that affect our communities as she did. Professor Carty-Bennia's dedication survives in the memories of those who knew and worked with her and lives on in those who choose to pursue a similar dream.

Special keynote remarks at this year's program will be given by Rachel Muņoz '06, Partner at Morgan, Brown & Joy

Rachel Muņoz ’06 is a partner at Morgan, Brown & Joy, where she provides advice and counsels clients on a wide range of issues, including hiring, background check procedures, discrimination and harassment, wrongful discharge, performance management, internal investigations, terminations, and wage and hour violations. In addition to defending employers before state and federal courts and administrative agencies, Rachel is an experienced negotiator and regularly helps clients resolve disputes through mediation or directly with opposing parties. In her labor law practice, Rachel represents employers in union organizing situations, collective bargaining negotiations, grievance administration and arbitration, and in proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board, the Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations, and state and federal courts. At Morgan, Brown & Joy, Rachel coordinates the firm's involvement with the Leadership Council on Diversity ("LCLD"). The LCLD is an organization dedicated to building a more open and diverse legal profession.

Rachel has been a contributing panelist at various continuing legal education seminars and was the featured management speaker at the National Labor Relations Board/United States Department of Labor 38th and 42nd Annual Robert Fuchs Labor Law Conference. She regularly conducts seminars and trainings on the Massachusetts Open Meeting Law, Conflict of Interest Law, and Health Care Reform Law, as well as the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. In 2015, Rachel received the Excellence in the Law Up & Coming Lawyer Award from the Massachusetts Bar Association and Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.  In 2016, Rachel was named a "Rising Star" in the field of employment and labor by Boston Magazine's Super Lawyers edition.

Prior to joining Morgan, Brown & Joy, Rachel served as a law clerk to the Justices of the Massachusetts Superior Court and worked at another Boston firm focused on traditional labor law. She has also taught legal research and writing at Northeastern University School of Law. Rachel is an active member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and currently serves on the Committee on Membership and Member Services.
