a 2016 Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education- sponsored

FREE Summer Institute

for Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists

~who work in Massachusetts elementary and secondary schools with students with disabilities~

This institute is designed to provide tools to enable occupational therapists and physical therapists to advance their practice skills within the school setting.  Participants will be empowered to provide educationally relevant services consistent with policies governing school practice.  Topics will include the role of the occupational therapist and physical therapist within the school setting, current laws and regulations, workload management, strategies for evaluating school participation, providing services within natural school contexts, objective data collection, using evidence to inform practice, working as a collaborative member of the educational team, response to intervention, and secondary transition. Participants will learn to utilize on-line resources to inform their practice.

Institute Requirements: This institute includes 6 days of on-site instruction, seven hours of on-line learning and participation, and completion of a project in the fall.  MA DESE requires that institute participants must attend all sessions and complete all course requirements in order to participate and receive 67.5 PDPs. No partial credit will be given.

Optional graduate credit is available for a $285 fee through Fitchburg State University.

Dates:  July 11, 25, 26, 27 (8:30 – 3:30), September 16 (8:30 – 2:30), and November 19 (8:30 – 4:00), 2016. There will also be online participation and a project in the fall.

Participants will be accepted on a first -come, first -served basis. Applicants will be notified of acceptance on a rolling basis until the institute is fully enrolled, with consideration given to ensure a balance of OT and PT as well as geographic distribution of participants across the state.
