Empowered to Parent

Join us for this two-day conference with Henry Milton and Jim Harlow, Child Develoment Fellows at Texas Christian University's Institute of Child Development, as we dicuss practical ways to incorporate the TBRI® intervention model in your family.

Developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross at the TCU Institute of Child Development, Trust-Based Relational Interventions® (TBRI®) is an emerging intervention model for a wide range of childhood behavioral problems. It has been applied successfully in a variety of contexts, and with many children for whom numerous other interventions have failed (e.g., medications, cognitive-behavioral therapies.) TBRI®is based on a solid foundation of neuropsychological theory and research, tempered by humanitarian principles. It is a family-based intervention that is designed for children who have experienced relationship-based traumas such as institutionalization, multiple foster placements, maltreatment, and/or neglect. For the past ten years, Drs. Purvis and Cross have been implementing and evaluating TBRI® , and their strategies have proven extremely effective in creating healing environments for children who have come from “hard places.”

Henry Milton is a Child Development Fellow of the Institute of Child Development, hired on by Dr. Purvis and Dr. Cross to go out to conduct trainings and workshops over Trust-Based Relational Intervention techniques designed by The Institute of Child Development with Texas Christian University.

Henry currently resides in Fort Worth, has been married for 6 years, and has two beautiful children: Elijah 4yrs old and Micah 2 yrs old.   Henry earned his B.S. from Texas A&M University-Commerce, TX with a major in Psychology and went on to complete his masters from Capella University in Psychology as well.  Henry began working with at-risk youth in summer youth camps as a camp counselor, while in college.  After college, Henry went on to work as an addiction counselor and mental health specialists, for over 12 years, with at-risk youth suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues.    With over 12 years of experience working hands on with youth, Henry is able to help apply the evidenced based approaches of TBRI in practical and useful ways.

Jim Harlow is an adoptive father of 5 children who joined his family at different ages, ranging from 3 months to 15 years, and out of various traumatic backgrounds.   Jim was self-employed in another career for over 30 years, while focusing on the demands of his family, now ages 29-46.  After returning to school to earn his master’s in counseling in 2009, he worked with adults with mental illness diagnoses for 18 months before joining the Institute of Child Development at TCU.  His responsibilities there include training parents and professionals in the Trust Based Relational Intervention® strategies developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross over the past 12 years.  His years as an adoptive father give him unique insights into the reality and effects of the stress that adoption can bring and the joys and satisfaction that are possible.
