Peter Mackler Award Ceremony 2017

No institution is more vital to a functioning democracy than a free press. Yet in 2017, it is the Press itself that has come under remarkable assault in some of the world's largest democracies. From death threats to personal attacks by national leaders, join us for a panel discussion that addresses the current challenges journalists in Mexico and the United States face every day.

The panel will be preceded by a short ceremony recognizing Marcos Vizcarra as the 2017 recipient of the Peter Mackler Award for Courageous and Ethical Journalism. A networking reception will follow (drink ticket included in price of admission).

Panelists:

Jorge Guajardo (Senior Director, McLarty Associates)
Before joining McLarty Associates, Ambassador Guajardo served as the Mexican Ambassador to China and the General Consul of Mexico to the United States in Austin, Tx. He has also worked for government in Mexico and has extensive private sector experience as well.

Marcos Vizcarra (2017 Peter Mackler award recipient)
Mr. Vizcarra is currently a staff reporter at Noroeste (Sinaloa, Mexico). He is the author of a lengthy investigative report on the use of torture by the government of his home state of Sinaloa (Mexico) and a former fellow in the Press and Democracy Program at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City.

Mary Jordan (Washington Post)
Ms. Jordan is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist currently covering national political issues for the Washington Post. She is the author of the Christopher Award winning book "The Prison Angel" on a woman helping destitute individuals held in a Mexican Prison, and contributed a chapter to "Trump Revealed", a 2016 best selling biography of Donald J. Trump by staff at the Washington Post.

Moderated by Marcus Brauchli (Co-founder and Managing Partner, North Base Media).
Prior to launching North Base Media, Mr. Brauchli was a vice president of the Washington Post Co. and executive editor of The Washington Post, overseeing its news and content operations, including new media, video and digital innovation. During his editorship, the Post won seven Pulitzers.
