Norwich Downtown
Preservation & Development Conference

The City of Norwich, also known as “The Rose of New England”, is a historic gem, rich in industry and architecture, as well as business and development opportunities.

With buildings of monumental character and dramatic views because of steep-slope terracing, downtown Norwich boasts streetscapes of unusual historic integrity and variety. Located at the confluence of the Shetucket, Yantic, and Thames rivers, this compact downtown exudes 19th century charm while offering 21st century amenities. The rivers, key to downtown’s initial prosperity, are a recreational resource today. Adjacent to Norwich Harbor is the Howard T. Brown Park with boat launching site and pedestrian paths, as well as the 200-slip Marina at American Wharf.

The Downtown Norwich Historic District represents the core of the downtown area. Including 115 contributing buildings, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Several buildings are also individually listed on the National Register, including the Norwich Town Hall.

Downtown Norwich boasts several entertainment and cultural venues, such as:  the Chestnut Street Playhouse, the Norwich Arts Center, the Slater Memorial Museum, and much more. A variety of pub-style and ethnic restaurants enrich the resident and visitor experience, including craft breweries: Epicure Brewing and These Guys Brewing.

The Norwich Community Development Corporation facilitates business and development activities and operates Foundry 66, a unique co-working space downtown. The Greater Norwich Area Chamber of Commerce is an active partner in promotion of business and community.

The core downtown and two adjoining census tracks are designated Opportunity Zones. The downtown is readily accessed by Route 2 and Interstate 395 and is in close proximity to the world-class Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casinos. The Norwich Intermodal Transportation Center provides downtown parking and transit service.

Norwich has launched a Global City Initiative with a goal of capitalizing on the great ethnic diversity of the community and region for new business development, as well as to promote cultural celebrations downtown.
