PROFIBUS, PROFINET and IO-Link Seminar - Wrexham, September 26

Glyndwr flight simulator Sponsored by Glyndwr University and featuring a presentation from cyber security expert  Dr Paul Comerford, this free-to-attend seminar addresses the key practical issues arising from the use of digital communications technologies in automated manufacturing and process industry applications, with particular attention to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0.

There will also be a prize draw to win a 20 minute flight in Glyndwr's state of the art Merlin flight simulator.

Covering key application areas such as mechanical handling and logistics, robotics, automotive engineering, electrical and electronics assembly, control systems and energy management, pulp & paper, chemical, utilities, pharmaceutical, packaging and printing, it focuses on the practical aspects of using PROFIBUS, PROFINET and IO-Link, from system design and safety considerations through to fault-finding and maintenance.

Supported by demonstrations of actual tools used in configuration and maintenance, the seminar will be of great value to Designers, Production/System Engineers, Instrument Technicians/Engineers and C&I Engineers involved in design, operation and maintenance of modern automated factories and process plant.

With nearly 80 million nodes  installed worldwide, PROFIBUS, PROFINET and IO-Link are truly market leaders, providing state of the art digital communications addressing all the needs of manufacturing and process industries, significantly lowering capital expenditure on installation, commissioning and maintenance. They offer unprecedented integration of automation, control, monitoring and safety systems using standardised and widely supported communications and networking solutions.

This seminar is ably presented by specialists from PI UK member companies and experts from Glydwr University. Attendance is free of charge to pre-registered delegates from the User community, i.e. companies that own, operate, design, build or maintain automated plant. The event will provide delegates with an excellent networking opportunity and the ability to speak to our experts whom, we promise, will not force you to buy anything.

“Very well presented and a lot of useful information” “Fantastic as always and very informative”

“Superb day for experience and information”

If you’d like to learn how to simplify your PROFIBUS, PROFINET or IO-Link application … don’t miss this one-day Seminar!

09:30 – 10:00

Welcome and introduction to the exhibitors

Andy Smith, Endress+Hauser

10:00 – 10:15

Key note address

Phil Storrow, Glyndwr University

10:15 – 10:45

PROFIBUS International and basics of PROFIBUS and PROFINET

Mark Freeman, Siemens

10:45 – 11:05

PROFIBUS DP/PA network design

Andy Smith, Endress+Hauser

An overview of the requirements for successful PROFIBUS DP/PA network design. Examples of networking components and typical design tools available.

11:05 – 11:25

PROFINET network design

Peter Brown, Siemens

11:25 – 12:00

Coffee and exhibition

12:00 – 12:20

Cyber security for industrial Ethernet

Dr Paul Comerford, Glyndwr University

12:20 – 12:40

PROFIBUS DP/PA network commissioning and testing

Richard Needham, Hi-Port Controls

12:40 – 13:00

PROFINET network commissioning and testing

Peter Thomas, Control Specialists

PROFINET is gradually becoming the network of choice for the automation industry in the UK. Whilst easy to set up and configure, it is essential that some form of installation and operational qualification of the network takes place to ensure a long life of trouble-free operation. This presentation will discuss the issues, the tools available and the criteria that the networks must meet.

13:00 – 14:30

Lunch and University tours

14:30 – 15:00

PROFIBUS and PROFINET device configuration tools.

Phil Waterworth, Endress+Hauser

A look at the types of tools and their development followed by a live demonstration of PROFIBUS and PROFINET device configuration using an open platform and web browser option.

15:00 – 15:20

IO-Link technology

Russell Smith - Balluff

This presentation will be covering what a typical IO-Link solution consists of, how it interfaces to the control system and the benefits that can be derived from this increased level of communication with IO-Link devices. These include: easier handling of measurement signals, remote and automatic device parameterisation, smart sensor diagnostic functions, safety over IO-Link whilst also being an enabler for Industrial IoT and Industry 4.0 strategies.

15:20 – 15:50

The effects of EMC on bus networks

Peter Thomas, Control Specialists

The recommendation for the grounding of the screens of PROFIBUS and PROFINET cables, in line with similar technologies, can lead to the screens unintentionally becoming part of the equipotential bonding network of the site. This short presentation will discuss the issues and how a new guideline that will shortly be released by PI addresses the problems.

15:50 – 16:00

Summary, questions, prize draw and close

Andy Smith, Endress+Hauser

The event will provide delegates with an excellent networking opportunity and the ability to speak with our experts.
