Messaging Historic Preservation to a Broader Audience
Wednesday, July 24, 2013
Francis Scott Key Lobby, St. John’s College, Annapolis

This one day workshop is an opportunity for members of the historic preservation community in Maryland to network with colleagues and learn about communicating, messaging and marketing historic preservation at the local, state and national levels.

Schedule
9:00-10:00 Registration and Coffee

10:00-10:15 Welcome
Tyler Gearhart, Executive Director, Preservation Maryland

10:15-11:30 We Need To Change Our Tune If We Want People to Sing Along
Terry Richey, Chief Marketing Officer, National Trust for Historic Preservation
Mr. Richey will speak about the NTHP’s new marketing campaign and the research which gave them a better understanding of people who may not label themselves as preservationists but support preservation work.  In order to attract new groups of people to preservation, we need to use language and tactics that appeal to them, and Mr. Richey will explain how the NTHP has done just that.

11:30-12:30 Preservation Stories Told Daily: Developing an Integrated Communications Strategy
Shannon Haltiwanger,
Preservation Communications & Special Projects Manager, History Colorado
At the same time the NTHP was rethinking marketing and communication about historic preservation, History Colorado hired an advertising and marketing firm to help them create a new message to attract the people of Colorado to preservation.  Ms. Haltiwanger will speak about the large and small steps the organization has taken over the last few years to market preservation to a new audience and provide some ideas that may work for your preservation organization.

12:30-1:30 Lunch
(Provided) – Opportunity to network and stretch your legs on St. John’s historic campus along College Creek.

1:30-2:30 PreserveMaryland Plan
Nell Ziehl & Tim Leahy, Maryland Historical Trust

The Maryland Historical Trust has sought comments from the general public about the state's historic preservation plan through an on-line survey and open forums.  Ms. Ziehl and Mr. Leahy will report on the findings of this research that relate to messaging, marketing and communicating about historic preservation in Maryland.

2:30-3:30 Putting Lessons Into Practice
This session provides participants with the tools they need to limit the jargon used when talking about preservation to non-preservationists, attract supporters at the local level, and get the word out about preservation in new and creative ways.  It will highlight the work of Baltimore Heritage, Coastal Heritage Alliance, Historic London Town, and a Main Street community.
