Delivering Meals to the Homeless

Pebble Tossers volunteers will prepare bagged lunches at their own homes and meet on Saturday, November 15, 2014 from noon - 4:00 to deliver lunches and smiles to the homeless living under the bridges in downtown Atlanta. This project is great for families, scout troops, NHS or BETA clubs, or kids who need service hours that directly serve the poor.

Every Saturday, the 7 Bridges Saturday Ministry provides 700 bagged lunches to the homeless in Atlanta. Pebble Tossers volunteers will be accompanied by a 7 Bridges Leadership Team member throughout the day. They have asked Pebble Tossers volunteers to provide 200 of these lunches.  Therefore, each family/group is asked to provide a minimum of 25 bagged lunches.  Many of these items can be purchased affordably at Aldi, Costco or Sam's Club.

DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING MEALS:

  • Sandwich:  white bread, bologna, cheese, mustard.  Placed in a ziplock baggie
  • Salty snack: such as individual portion of chips, pretzels, etc.
  • Sweet snack: such as granola bar, cookies, fruit roll-up
  • Piece of fruit: such as apple, banana, orange
  • Bottle of Water
  • Handwritten note (this optional note is to be an encouraging, "Have a Nice Day" type of note
  • All items are to be placed in a plastic grocery bag.
  • 10 plastic grocery lunch bags should be placed into a larger white kitchen trash bag
  • Optional- if you're a dog lover, many of the homeless are too!  Consider bringing small baggies of dog treat to handout as needed. Costco sells individual sized bags of dog food that is very convenient.
  • PLEASE EMAIL JEN HOW MANY LUNCHES YOU WILL BE PROVIDING: jguynn@pebbletossers.org

DRESS/ATTIRE

The ministry operates outside in all weather conditions.  Wear modest clothing and comfortable footwear that has good traction. Sandals and flip flops will limit your ability to go to many locations, especially under the bridges which can be slippery without the proper shoes.  Bring your own water bottle, wear sunscreen or bring a poncho if it's raining.

This project is a wonderful opportunity for families to serve together.  There is a considerable amount of walking, so it is appropriate for kids 5 and up.  All children MUST stay with their adult chaperone at all times.  If you cannot stay the entire 4 hours, it is fine to leave, as we will be caravaning to our meal delivery locations.  Please stay for as long as you can.
