How to Do a HIPAA Risk Analysis

A risk analysis is a required HIPAA safeguard. In order to best protect patient information, a dental practice must identify the risks and vulnerabilities to its electronic information systems and to develop a risk management plan. The process is not complicated but it must be comprehensive.

Teresa Pichay is a practice analyst with the California Dental Association. She holds a certificate in healthcare privacy compliance from the Health Care Compliance Association, and writes a monthly regulatory compliance column for the CDA Journal. She has lectured several times at CDA Presents and at component dental society meetings. She has worked for CDA since 1995, starting first with the Council on Dental Research and Developments, then moving on to Public Policy. Her current work with CDA Practice Support includes developing online compliance resources and providing guidance and information directly to members. She is a graduate of the University of Southern California.
