Workshop Description
Tri-Counties Regional Center is very pleased to partner with the Consortium on Innovative Practices and Beth Barol, DSW, to host this free seminar specifically designed for clinicians, service providers, direct support professionals and service coordinators. Dr. Barol will involve participants in exploring the very unique biographical timeline approach to trauma-informed care for people with intellectual disabilities. Her four-hour seminar will cover the following topics:
About Beth Barol
Dr. Barol has dedicated the past 39 years to serving and supporting people with Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) who also have challenging behaviors.
After working in a community- based agency for 19 years, she served for 10 years as the Clinical Director of the Pennsylvania Office of Mental Retardation’s Training and Technical Assistance Initiative, as a full-time consultant. Her responsibilities included directing the Positive Approaches/Dual Diagnosis Initiative, building a statewide network including state facilities and community programs, as well as providing clinically based training and consultation, including annual trauma institutes for clinicians throughout the state.
Her areas of special interest include: Positive Approaches with people with IDD and challenging behaviors including co-occurring mental illness, the effects of trauma, and neurological differences. She works on the behalf of these individuals through her clinical roles as well as through her experience in Group Process, Conflict Resolution, Partnership Building, Leadership Development, System Change, and Management. She has been working with Biographical Timelines as part of her practice on a micro as well as a macro practice level for over 20 years. She is currently the Associate Dean and director of Widener University’s Center for Social Work Education. She initiated and co-directs the certificate in IDD associated with the MSW program as well as the Clinical Services for Vulnerable Adults (CSVA) clinic. Dr. Barol also consults regularly in the U.S. and internationally.
