Thermo Fisher Scientific is an American precision laboratory equipment company that was created in 2006 by the merger of Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific. [Wikipedia] Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (NYSE: TMO) is the world leader in serving science, with revenues of $17 billion and 50,000 employees in 50 countries. Our mission is to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We help our customers accelerate life sciences research, solve complex analytical challenges, improve patient diagnostics and increase laboratory productivity. Our four premier brands – Thermo Scientific, Life Technologies, Fisher Scientific and Unity Lab Services – offer an unmatched combination of innovative technologies, purchasing convenience and comprehensive support.

Protochips, Inc. is a rapidly growing early-stage company focused on providing the world's leading materials and life sciences research breakthrough analytical tools for targeted research and development of nano-scale materials. A fundamental problem exists today in that the tools used to observe and the tools used to work with nano-scale materials are separate and independent. A strong market need exists to combine these tools into an integrated platform. Using its own proprietary technology, Protochips is addressing this compelling market need by transforming the most widely used tools in nanotechnology – electron and optical microscopes - from cameras into complete nano-scale laboratories. Our core competency is in the application of semiconductor techniques to the development of MEMS devices capable of providing heat, electrical, liquid and gas environments to samples in situ. Our products enable the study of materials for the life and materials sciences in ways currently not possible, and will ultimately provide the solution for the development and commercialization of revolutionary new nano-scale materials.

Microscopy Innovations, LLC is life science tools company founded in 2007 to create novel products for microscopy laboratories.
Our mPrep™ product line offers significant improvements in specimen preparation, handling and storage. Our current products are used primarily in electron microscopy. Future products will extend technology into light microscopy applications. The  core mPrep technology is covered by US patents, as well as pending US and international patents.

Overview

UW Madison is hosting  a Shared Instrumentation Facilities open house on Thursday and Friday, June 5-6, 2014,  to increase awareness of the unique and broad spectrum of capabilities within our characterization and fabrication laboratories.  The open house is held in conjunction with the Midwest Microscopy and Microanalysis Society meeting (M3S) on in situ microscopy of materials,  on Friday, June 6th, 2014 only (M3S Registration information).

The open house will be held in the Materials Science Building with specific functions next door in the Mechanical Engineering Building (final details to be announced when you check in).

  • Would you like a more comprehensive overview of the instrumental capabilities available on campus for your use?
  • Do you have specific questions on how our broad spectrum of capabilities can help your research or product development?
  • Do you need some specific contract work done but don't have the bandwidth to do it yourself?

Join us for tours, demos, refreshments and research & operations discussions involving the materials characterization and fabrication facilities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Engineering Quad.

For more information, please contact Dr. Jon McCarthy, Director of Shared Instrument Facilities.
