Getting Started with Structural Equation Modeling

An ISSR Short Course by Laras Sekarasih

Description:

Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) enables researchers to conduct analyses for testing a priori model, such as confirmatory factor analysis and mediation analysis. Designed for individuals without prior experience with SEM, this workshop will give a preview about SEM as a statistical technique for data analysis. We will discuss what SEM is, its characteristics, and what it is useful for (and what it is not useful for). This workshop will also introduce participants to the basics of interpreting an SEM report.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will know:

  • The characteristics of SEM
  • What SEM can and cannot do
  • How to read basic symbols that are commonly used in SEM report
  • How to interpret SEM report
  • The basic steps of conducting SEM (Confirmatory Factor Analysis and path analysis) using LISREL

Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops and download the student version of LISREL (http://www.ssicentral.com/lisrel/student.html) prior to the workshop. Please note that LISREL currently requires Windows operating system, but can be installed on Mac computers that are dual-booted with Windows.
