Intermediate Stata 

An ISSR Short Course by Irene Boeckmann 

Description:

This workshop is designed for Stata users with a basic working knowledge of Stata who want to advance their programming skills. The course will address a variety of topics aimed at saving time by ensuring more efficient programming. Topics include: organizing do-files, using local macros, looping, reshaping data, appending and merging data, and working with time and date variables. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops if they have Stata 11 or 12 installed; a limited number of ISSR laptops will be available for use.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • use master do-files to organize do-files for a project efficiently
  • Create macros to save time and space
  • Use the foreach and forval commands to avoid writing lengthy repetitive code
  • Reshape data from wide to long format and vice versa
  • Use the egen command to create a variety of summary variables
  • Work with time and date variables
  • Use the margins command in Stata to obtain predicted probabilities
