*Continuing Education

This course, Weekly Psychodrama Training, Approval #203006-1603, provided by Psychodrama New Jersey is approved for continuing education by the New Jersey Social Work Continuing Education Approval Collaborative, which is administered by NASW-NJ. CE Approval Collaborative Approval Period: Tuesday, September 1, 2020 through August 31, 2022. New Jersey social workers will receive 90 Clinical, 6 Ethics, 3 Social & Cultural Competency, totaling 99 CEU credits CE credits for participating in this course.

Approved Training Hours

All 99 hours of this training course may be counted towards certification as approved by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy. 

Participant Information

Training groups include students and professionals with various educational and professional backgrounds ranging from beginner to advanced skill levels. Some advanced participants may be seeking certification while intermediate or beginner participants may seek training for professional development or skill building purposes. The course provides content and training hours required for board certification in psychodrama. Board Certified Practitioner’s (CP) and CP eligible candidates must be masters level licensed mental health professionals. Therefore, the material presented in this course builds upon techniques, knowledge and skills learned in introductory collegiate level courses. Participants at the beginning skill level will minimally have completed some collegiate level course work and demonstrate an interest and aptitude for pursuing an advanced level mental health degree (ex. Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, Pastoral Counseling, Expressive Arts Therapies, Art Therapy, Dance/ Movement Therapy, Drama Therapy, or Music Therapy). This psychodrama training uses an adult learning model, so education and learning flows from all available resources, allowing advanced and intermediate (i.e. current masters level students or recent graduates) skill level participants the benefit of furthering their clinical acumen via the questions and enthusiasm of beginning level participants. 


Psychodrama interventions are creative, engaging, and interactive for group and individual treatment. Learn techniques that are safe, supportive, and effective. Gain a knowledge base to facilitate meaningful and effective sessions with clients. This on-going training provides a uniquely supportive professional refuge as well as a rich educational experience.

Tuition & Payment

$200 per month, September-June.

Monthly tuition will be due on the first training day of each month.

This course is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the philosophy, theory and methodology of psychodrama, sociometry and group psychotherapy for beginner, intermediate and advanced level participants.  Participants will be introduced to the principles and practices of psychodrama & group psychotherapy including, the history and development of group psychotherapy, the origins of psychodrama as the original expressive art therapy, theoretical and philosophical underpinnings, and clinical interventions for a variety of clinical settings. The majority of class time will be devoted to experiential learning and skills building exercises and much like a college course will regularly incorporate lectures, discussion of readings, and interactive demonstrations. The on-going format allows each week’s class to build upon the knowledge and skills of the proceeding classes. 

 Participants will be able to:

1. Verbalize an understanding of basic psychodramatic theory (i.e. sociometry, role, creativity & spontaneity theory).

2. Discuss some aspects of psychodrama philosophy i.e. Catharsis of integration, “here & now”, child development, etc.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of psychodrama structure i.e. warm-up, action, and sharing.

4. Demonstrate an understanding of doubling, mirroring and role reversal techniques.

5. Explain and implement a social atom exercise.

6. Utilize action techniques for assessment, intervention, and evaluation purposes.

7. Discuss how psychodrama and sociodrama can be integrated with other related fields and modalities.

8. Discuss and demonstrate directing skills (i.e. determining a therapeutic hypothesis, setting clinical goals, identifying act hungers, open tensions, and central concern).

9. Verbalize an understanding of various psychodrama terms including surplus reality, tele, sociometry, auxiliary, etc.

10. Demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues* in the application and practice of psychodrama.

11. Demonstrate how action interventions can be used to recognize and address *cultural factors within the group psychotherapy process (i.e. role training, sociometry, sharing).

12. Demonstrate the ability to process a psychodramatic session.

13. Discuss how sociodrama can be used to address issues of *social justice and human rights in group settings.

COVID-19 Updates: Psychodrama New Jersey is taking the journey through the uncharted terrain of psychodrama in a pandemic world with great caution. Refunds: Full refunds are given for cancellations made two weeks before the start of this training. Cancellations made with less than 2 weeks notice will be refunded minus $50 cancellation fee. Refund requests should be submitted in writing and directed to Scottie Urmey, LScottUrmeyLCSW@comcast.net. Once training has started, no refunds are offered for absences or missed training sessions, on-going weekly training requires a commitment to attend the full experience. However, if Psychodrama New Jersey cancels training sessions due to local government requirements and CDC guidelines presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, full refunds will be issued.
