Join us for the High Holidays!

Dear All,

Does it seem like the last twelve months of News has become much more dire? We have been gripped by fearful headlines that broadcast acts of brute force: Gaza...Ferguson...guns... beheadings...ISIS...Ukraine...more guns... suicide...dozens of campus rapes...even more guns... and our own elected leadership stays stuck in a backroom partisan stasis.

It makes me feel powerless; or at least, less powerful.  So, for Yontif, I am preparing tales (of course) and materials to share with you, that explore small ways we can empower ourselves to better understand and even change the world around us, just by noticing the words used in describing elements of our everyday lives.   Our primary source is the wonderful book, “Power vs. Force,” by David R. Hawkins, M.D, Ph.D.  I hope to be able to share simple watchwords that disempower or empower us, and with that, open the door to discover a small improvement in how we all can cope with such a challenging, changing world.  I really cannot wait to share some of these everyday word comparisons.

This Yontif marks our TENTH YEAR at St. John’s and I cannot wait to see you all as we share services together.  As usual, if any amongst you wishes to read Torah, Haftorah, sound the Shofar or contribute in other ways (including the Yom Kippur Forum on Forgiveness), please let us know you're coming.  And the large break-fast spread is, as usual, from Murrays Bagels!

May we all find our way to peace in the coming year, and may you and yours be inscribed (and sealed) in the book of life for another year to come.

See you in Shul.

Daniel Neiden, Cantor
