Promoting the Power of Education Award Recipient:
The Milestones Project

 Nearly a decade
 ago, as Richard
 and Michele
 Steckel looked
 at the mayhem
 of ethnic
cleansing, race riots, and religious hatred, they decided they had to do something to change the way people dealth with one another. They believed that if people could show how we are alike, rather than focusing on how we are different, we would be more accepting and understanding, and even respectful, of our differences and of one another.

Based on this belief, they founded the Milestones Project and began photographing children of all races, religions, and cultures at the 'milestones' in their lives that are common to all of us. First tooth, first best friend, first haircut — they traveled the world photographing children and getting them to write their stories. They collected quotations and testimonials from some of the world's most significant leaders and humanitarians to back up their photographs. They committed their lives to this monumental initiative — and with stunning results.

The beautiful Milestones photographs have inspired managers of public places, where people of different races and cultures gather or pass through and experience these remarkable examples of commonality.

Become a Sponsor for the 11th Annual Promoting the Power of Education Scholarship Luncheon

At Arapahoe Community College, we do more than educate. We provide opportunities for people to change their station in life. We help our students find a career, rather than a job; we help them become homeowners, rather than renters; and most importantly, we help empower them, so they can empower their communities.

For 50 years, ACC has impacted hundreds of thousands of students and 95% of them have remained in Colorado; contributing back to our economy and being productive citizens in our community.

Annually, the ACC Foundation hosts our Promoting the Power of Education Scholarship Luncheon to celebrate our student scholarship recipients and honor someone in the community who is truly promoting the power of education. Through sponsorship for the event, we are able to raise funds to support student successteaching excellence and provide a world class learning environment

We hope that you will consider becoming a sponsor at this year’s luncheon celebration. Your organization will receive exposure from media campaigns and all promotions for the event. You will also gain exposure from the hundreds of educators, businesses and community leaders in attendance. As a company who values the importance of education and community, you are definitely an ideal partner for us in this venture.

Thank you for considering being our partner. Your investment is so meaningful.  Please contact me if you have questions at 303.797.5914 or Courtney.loehfelm@arapahoe.edu.

More About the Promoting the 11th Annual Power of Education Award Recipient:
Dr. Richard & Shelli Steckler's The Milestones Project

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Dr. Richard Alan Steckel passed
away in peace the morning of June 19th, 2015. In his stead, cofounder Michele "Shelli"
Steckler will be receiving the award to honor the incredible work these two have
  accomplished together.

Born on August 18, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York, Richard knew, early on, that he would
travel the world and make it a better, and more just, place. And so, at age 19, he
began the life he imagined, traveling to countries to aid those most in need; helping
organizations throughout the world do better by "doing good;" and capturing, through photos, the commonalities that people share to create greater understanding among all.

In 1998, Littleton residents Dr. Richard and Shelli Steckel began the Milestones Project, an endeavor comprised of taking and exhibiting, thousands of photos of international children and adults to promote cultural tolerance.

'Littleton: My International Home Sweet Home' - a Milestones Project initiative commissioned by ACC - is a portrait exhibit created to showcase the gifts of diversity in our community. The exhibit is a collaborative tribute to the friends, neighbors, merchants, and students who have chosen to live, work, and study in Littleton.

"These are portraits of immigrants captured in the context of their daily lives and showing the face they want the world to see, whether it be at work or school," said the late Dr. Richard Steckel at the installation of phase one (second floor & main entrance) of 'Littleton: My International Home Sweet Home' in November 2007. Phase two (first floor) of the project was installed in March 2015.

The Milestones project has been honored by the United Nations, acknowledged by Time Magazine, and viewed by more than 120 million people in airports around the globe.
