The Future of Libraries 

Summary:

This year at the SOCHE Library Conference we will be exploring the future of Libraries with Miguel A. Figueroa.  Miguel is the director of the new American Library Association Center for the Future of the Libraries. He is responsible for identifying and disseminating information on long term societal, technological, educational, and demographic trends that may affect libraries and their future. The Center serves as a definitive resource for libraries and the profession, promoting innovative and future-oriented thinking that will help position libraries for long term sustainability and success.

The SOCHE Library Conference will encourage networking and help librarians across the region build connections to help libraries address emerging issues.

Miguel A. Figueroa 

  In April, 2014, Miguel A. Figueroa was named as the first director of the American Library Association Center for the Future of the Libraries. The Center focuses on emerging trends, provokes discussion on how to shape the future, builds connections with experts from a wide variety of fields, and provides a forum for innovative thinkers from all sectors to share ideas and explore joint solutions to the challenges facing libraries and society.

Figueroa has served as Director of Member Programs for the American Theological Library Association in Chicago since June 2012, where he has coordinated member recruitment, outreach and development . From 2009-2012, he served as Director of the Office for Diversity and Spectrum Scholarship Program and the Office of Literacy and Outreach Services at the American Library Association, where he coordinated member services, initiatives and programs, training and resource development and relationships with external partners.

Prior to Coming to ALA Figueroa received an M.A. in Information Resources and Library Science from the University of Arizona in 2003.  In 2005, he was selected byLibrary Journal as a “Mover and Shaker.”
