With imagination, planning and research, existing retail and industrial properties can be redeveloped into spaces for entirely new uses. Termed “adaptive reuse," this approach to real estate supports green building initiatives and benefits local and regional economies.

Many cities in the US have empty buildings from extinct industries. Examples of repurposing can include import/export facilities for domestic and international businesses, real estate near ports and airports and industrial warehouse buildings. However, in periods of global downturn, more locally based small businesses may grow and flourish, encouraging bioscience, art communities and small retail businesses to flourish in former warehouse and industrial space.

Discussion Points

  • Industrial/Factory Facility Conversions
  • Retail/Mixed Use Conversions
  • Top Trends in Repurposing
  • What to Expect in over the next 5-10 years in New England & Mid-Atlantic
  • What Does it all Mean for Architects, Engineers & Constructors?
