Explore the Lone Star State while learning
about those who made it great!
The Texas Forts Trail Caravan is for anyone who enjoys a road trip! When the Forts Trail was founded in 1968 by Governor John Connally and the Texas Highway Department (now TXDOT), the governor, his wife, and an entourage of state and regional officials drove the entire 600+ mile trail in two days time! In honor of the trail's 50th anniversary we'll be replicating that caravan drive over a three day period in early October.
You can expect stops at eight historic forts and at the largest Spanish fort built in Texas! Each of these sites played crucial roles in the history of our great state - and nation. Along the way we'll enjoy local cuisine that will bring your taste buds to life! The caravan will have plenty of stops in quaint towns with lots of folklore. Drive time will be occupied with trivia games and I Spy, with prizes to be awarded at the end of the day.
Join us for a real Texas treat - whether for just a 20-mile leg of the trip, a full day or the entire journey!
There is no charge for participating in the Caravan and registration is
not required - although for planning purposes we certainly appreciate
knowing how many folks will be joining in!
However, reservations ARE required if you'd like to the partake of the
pre-planned lunches and dinners. Many of the places we will be traveling
through and/or stopping in are small rural communities or sites with
very limited dining options. We strongly suggest making plans to be
part of the group meals in order to share the experience with your
fellow travelers and to guarantee getting an authentic local meal.
