Sign Up to Judge the 18th Annual Client Counseling Competition on Saturday, October 22, 2016

Volunteers are needed to judge the William S. Boyd School of Law’s 18th Annual Client Counseling Competition on Friday, October 21, 2016 and Saturday, October 22, 2016. Volunteers should be Nevada attorneys, judges or mediators. Most volunteers will be needed for the preliminary rounds of the competition (Friday night). Remember, judging the competition qualifies as pro bono service!

Friday, October 21, 2016

  • 5:45 - 6:00 p.m. – Instructions & Room Assignments
  • 6:00 - 10:00 p.m. – Preliminary Rounds
Saturday, October 22, 2016
  • 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. – Semi-Final & Final Rounds

The event will be held at UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law, 4505 South Maryland Parkway in Las Vegas, Nevada.

An expected 80 to 90 law students will compete while local judges and attorneys act as either clients or as judges to assess their skills. 

The Client Counseling Competition provides an opportunity for law students to test their interview skills with potentially difficult clients.  The competition tests their ability to:

  • Establish effective relations with the client in a short interview
  • Analyze the client’s problemAssess relevant facts from irrelevant information
  • Learn the client’s goals and expectations
  • Recognize potential ethical conflicts
  • Develop alternative solutions to the client’s problem
  • Assist the client in understanding and making informed choices among possible courses of actionEffectively conclude the interview
