2nd Annual Tribal Leaders Summit on Climate Change

The Tulalip Tribes and ATNI invite tribal councils, policy leaders, tribal staff and agency representatives to a 2-day gathering on Sept 14 th and 15 th from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at the Silver Reef Hotel Casino Spa, to talk about the needs and opportunities of meeting the challenges of
governance in a rapidly changing world. Climate change is already happening and will continue
to impact tribal governments, tribal communities, and the trust resources that sustain tribal
culture. This gathering will focus on two levels of governance needed to meet the challenges
and opportunities of climate change:
1) Development and implementation of tribal climate adaptation plans and
2) Tribal rights and authorities and climate change.
 

 Preliminary Agenda

On Day 1, we’ll hear from tribes what has worked and where the challenges are in
implementing climate adaptation plans and we’ll show how scenario planning to
illustrate plausible futures can assist decision makers in managing risks and to better
evaluate approaches and solutions.
 

On Day 2, we’ll focus on tribal rights and authorities and climate, addressing protection
of trust resources locally and nationally and consider the implications and needs for
consultation and policy development in national and international governance stated in
the Tribal Climate Change Principles (ATNI/NCAI, 2015). Day 2 will also focus on the role
of tribal governments in implementing COP21 Paris Agreement.
