Strategies for Fostering an Anti-ableist Learning Environment in the Classroom and on the Wards 

Disability impacts individuals at all levels of the healthcare system, including physicians. During this session, participants will learn about ableism and its impact within the medical profession, curricular and extra-curricular efforts at Harvard Medical School to foster an inclusive anti-ableist learning and clinical practice community, and strategies and resources for developing actively inclusive teaching practices. The session will be taught through the complementary lenses of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to mitigating the impact of ableism in medicine and will highlight student experiences as learners and advocates in the HMS community.By the end of this session, participants will be able to

  1. Define ableism and how it can impact the medical student experience.
  2. Describe key concepts for creating inclusive learning environments for medical students.
  3. Articulate appropriate language to use when talking about disability in classroom and clinical teaching settings.
  4. Identify and utilize resources at HMS to support teaching and mentoring of medical students living with disabilities and their allies.
