CALL for ENTRIES :: Art by Architects

STATEMENT

All architects are also artists to the extent that architecture is an applied art form. Some architects also create visual fine art: painting, sculpture, drawing, etc. They do this to make art as an avocation or to inspire their architectural work. This curated exhibition during spring 2013 is an opportunity for architects in Virginia to exhibit some of their best visual fine art at the Virginia Center for Architecture in Richmond, Virginia. It is also an opportunity for the public to see the range of artistic talent in the architectural community.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility is open to all residents of Virginia who have degree in architecture; licensure or membership in the AIA is not required.  Virginia Society AIA members may submit up to five works of art for consideration without a fee. All other submittals require a fee of $20 per work of art, with a limit of five. Insurance of the artwork is the artist’s responsibility.

SUBMISSIONS

Work submitted should be made by the hand of the artist; no digital drawings or photographs will be considered. Only visual fine art will be considered, to include painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic) drawing (pencil, ink), and collages (mixed media). Applied art such as furniture, sculpture, jewelry or ceramics will not be part of this exhibition. Subject matter of the art need not be architectural in content.  All work must be exhibited by wall hanging and should be available for the duration of the exhibition (April 11 through July 7, 2013). Artists are requested to submit PDF images (at least 300 dpi and 5 inches wide), one image per work of art, with a notation of the actual size of each piece.

JURY

A set of well regarded architects/artists outside Virginia will make the selection of art to be exhibited. Criteria for exhibition will be artistic merit and quality of execution. Submission will be in the form of digital photographs of the art pieces.

ENTRY SPECIFICATIONS

Five submissions per entrant are permitted with a maximum size of 8’ in any one direction.  All artwork must be framed, wired and ready to hang. Each artist is responsible for the delivery and retrieval of the accepted art pieces.  Art may be for sale during the exhibition at the discretion of the artist, with a 60/40 artist/museum split. Each artist will submit 1) a completed Call for Entries form, 2) a digital image of each piece, and 3) payment for the entry fee if not a VSAIA member.
