Speaker: Dr. Joneen Lowman
Target Audience: Teachers of Reading, speech therapists, literacy coaches
Description: Poor vocabulary plagued by difficulties acquiring and retaining words is a hallmark characteristic of students with language impairment. However, knowledge of discrete words is but one aspect of the semantic domain of language. The session will provide the participant with a deeper understanding of semantics that extends beyond the single word level. To do so, participants will learn best practice for addressing semantic feature deficits that are critical to skills such as categorization, synonyms/antonyms, and multiple meaning words. This comprehensive discussion of semantics also will include best practice for the treatment of derivational morphology (i.e. prefixes and suffixes) along with the contribution of syntax to semantic understanding.
By the end of the session the participant will be able to:
1. Identify at least 2 strategies for teaching individual words
2. Identify at least 2 strategies for teaching the concepts of synonym, antonym, multiple meaning word, and categorization.
3. Identify at least 2 strategies for teaching derivational morphology.
