Communicating through Distress – Part 2: Helping when the Person is Very Limited in Speech...

This session is designed to build responsive skills when confronted with someone who is distressed and is not necessarily aware of the real situation, time frame, or location. Once we explore responses to some of the most common issues (wanting to see or leaving, doing something that is risky or dangerous), we will attempt to address real life issues that are provided by attendees.

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  1. describe commonly retained abilities and missing abilities when a PLwD is in a distressed Amber, Ruby, or Pearl state
  2. discuss the impact on our reactions or efforts to use language or physical action when a PLwD is in a state of distress
  3. compare the impact of using supportive communication strategies and techniques with more common techniques when the person is in Amber, Ruby, or Pearl state.
