June 12, 2018: DAA - Reframing Dementia: Inclusive Communities 

This one-day workshop will provide attendees with an updated understanding of dementia. There will be a focus on what is preserved or possible from early to later state symptoms with supportive people and environments that enhance rather than impair abilities. In order to accomplish this goal, we will start by exploring what people know or think they know about the condition and compare it to what recent research and scientific evidence indicates. We will then examine ways in which lack of awareness, knowledge, and skills on the part of the care partner, therapist, mental health professional, or family member can play in triggering problematic situations and perpetuating negative outcomes. This program is designed to guide mental health professionals, care partners, and other attendees with simple and effective techniques and environmental modifications that are useful when alterations in cognitive abilities are recognized. The purpose is to provide strategies to successfully engage the person, and to reduce resistance and distress in routine communication, interaction, or transport situations, as well as resolve crisis situations without harm. The session is highly interactive and will provide attendees with hands-on knowledge and skill building for immediate use in daily interactions common service provision situations. Individuals living with dementia will be part of the training support team, and will provide personal perspectives and input into discussions.

Objectives - By the completion of this session learners will be able to:

• Discuss the critical need for communities to create dementia friendly support systems given the expected shift in demographics and numbers in the next 15-20 years
• Describe common symptoms of dementia that can and do impact public behaviors, social interactions, communication abilities, awareness of abilities of skills, impulse control and decision making, acceptance of guidance and assistance, and recall of previous interactions on current situations.
• Practice selected interactive skills to screen for possible cognitive changes that signal need for use of supportive approach for more successful outcomes in interactions and service provision
• Use selected techniques that reduce distress, encourage acceptance of assistance, and improve outcomes for both the person with the condition, family members, care providers and yourselves.

Continuing Education credit for this program is awarded (for events located in the US only) by Commonwealth Educational Seminars (CES) for the following professions:

Nurses:  As an American Psychological Association approved provider CES programs are accepted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Every state Board of Nursing accepts ANCC approved programs except California and Iowa, however CES is also an approved Continuing Education provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing, (Provider Number CEP15567) which is also accepted by the Iowa Board of Nursing. Nurses completing this program receive 6.0 CE hours of credit.

Social Workers: CES, provider #1117, is approved as a Provider for Social Work Continuing Education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org, through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. CES maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: 10/5/15 through 10/5/18. Social Workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval. Social Workers participating in this course will receive 6.0 clinical continuing education clock hours.
