10th Annual 1SG John Ordway Leadership Award Breakfast Sponsorship

Greetings from your AUSA “Best Chapter Overall”!  The Redstone-Huntsville Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) is hosting our 10th Annual 1SG John Ordway Leadership Award Breakfast honoring our outstanding First Sergeants serving in the Active, Reserve, and national Guard Components of the US Army.  The breakfast will be held on Friday, 3 October, 2014 at the Summit at Redstone from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.

The First Sergeant John Ordway Leadership Award was created in 2005 to recognize the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  Sergeant Ordway, a regular Army Soldier, served in the capacity of first sergeant on that expedition. His duties included making sure the men were taken care of, provided rations and properly equipped. He also wrote letters home to their families.

The Redstone Huntsville Chapter of AUSA believes that taking care of military families represents the highest traditions of leadership. So the board of directors felt that recognizing first sergeants who, by recommendation, "do most to support their Soldiers and families of their Soldiers" would inspire and encourage others to do the same as well as make a public statement that "taking care of Soldiers and their families is the right thing to do."

With permission of the descendants of Sergeant John Ordway, the award was created and named in honor of one of the first American Soldiers who was known for taking care of Soldiers and their families.

The special guest speaker will be CSM (retired) Ronald Riling, a previous AMC CSM.  CSM Riling is known as a true American hero who was awarded the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Meritorious Service Medal with a Silver Oak Leaf Cluster just to name a few.  He was also had earned the Drill Sergeant Badge, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Bade, Pathfinder Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Australian Parachutist Badge.

Also scheduled to be recognized at the breakfast will be SFC (Ret) Dave Carney, the individual primarily responsible for the award’s creation ten years ago.
