Reading Aloud: How to Impact Student Learning 

Join us November 9, 2017 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Kent State University at Trumbull – Technology Building, Room 117 for The Practice of Interactive Read Alouds, the fourth in an ongoing educational workshop series hosted by We Are Warren and Eastern Ohio Education Partnership (EOEP), where workshop leaders will walk community and non-profit leaders through best practices around reading and engagement.  Mahoning County Educational Service Center trainers will help organizations implement the practice of read alouds, a tool used in many of our local school districts.

An Interactive Read Aloud is a systematic method of reading a book aloud.  The teacher is doing the word decoding work and the students are asked to do the thinking work.  Through careful planning, teachers can better grasp the student’s understanding of the book being read.

“A read aloud goes beyond reading to the student.  It connects the book to the child’s life experience, and to universal concepts.  Our staff will help leaders model and teach comprehension strategies that will benefit both their staff and students,” explained Kim Davis, Mahoning County Educational Service Center’s Director of Teaching and Learning.  “These are simple solutions that show great impact.” 

Our fifth session, How to Align Mathematics, will take place December 14 at 8:30 a.m. at Kent State University at Trumbull.  Dr. Kim Yoak will teach how math is about creativity and connections – where questions are important and mistakes are valuable opportunities for teachers and students.
