Three (3) CEs will be proviided by Division 29 (Psychotherapy). APA Division 29 - Division of Psychotherapy - is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. APA Division 29 - Division of Psychotherapy - maintains responsibility for the program and its content.
This CE program will expose psychotherapists to the tenets of positive psychology and its applications to psychotherapy. Participants will learn about working with client strengths and resources in psychotherapy to help them achieve greater happiness, health, and productivity. Additionally, participants will learn how to engage their own strengths in ways that make their lives and work more meaningful and enjoyable. The workshop will address the five components of a “happy life” according to Seligman (2012) (pleasure, meaning, engagement, achievement, and relationships) and how individuals attend to or neglect each element in their personal and professional lives. Finally, participants will learn the ways that positive psychotherapy techniques can be used to help clients/patients who present with a range of concerns find meaning and happiness beyond their painful or traumatic experiences in life. Participants will engage with the presented material in a way that requires personal reflection and connection with their own subjective well-being. This program is targeted to an audience of psychologists and psychotherapists who are interested in applying positive psychology techniques to therapy. The instructional level of the presentation material is intermediate, as audience members are assumed to have related education and training in psychotherapy theory and techniques.

Dr. Christa K. Schmidt is a counseling psychologist licensed in Maryland since 2004. She is currently an assistant professor at Towson University where she is also the Director of the Master’s Program in Counseling Psychology. She specializes in positive psychology and psychotherapy, which focuses on teaching students, clients, and counselors the art of using personal strengths to overcome obstacles and achieve optimal well-being. Her research program centers on the intersection of psychological and physical well-being, in particular how the experience of positive emotions, gratitude, optimism, and resilience influences both psychological and physical health.

APA Division 29 - Division of Psychotherapy - is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. APA Division 29 - Division of Psychotherapy - maintains responsibility for the program and its content. 1 CE is granted for each contact hour of instruction for a total of 3 CEs for this program. Partial credit will not be offered or provided. Participants will be required to sign in prior to the start of the program. No CE will be provided to those arriving more than 10 minutes late or leaving more than 10 minutes early. In other words, you must be present for the entirety of the program in order to receive CE credits. Certificates will be provided at the completion of the program after attendees complete and submit an evaluation form. Participants are expected to ethically comply with these requirements.
A continental breakfast will be provided. Ample free parking is available. Remember to bring your business cards, as networking is always encouraged. The room temperature is comfortable, but comfort is subjective, so dress in layers if you wish.
