Health insurance rates have been rising dramatically in recent years impacting both individuals and businesses in Alaska. This month, Moda Health announced their intention to discontinue offering individual helath insurance plans in 2017, potentially leaving Alaska with only a single provider of individual health insurance next year. The Alaska Division of Insurance has said that rates may increase 40% in 2017. With these challenges on the horizon, it is critical that Alaskan businesses and policy makers understand the implications of these changes and implement policies to improve the health care marketplace in the state.
On June 1st, Commonwealth North will host a panel of health insurance experts to discuss the future of health insurance in Alaska. The panel will include executives from Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield, Moda Health, private sector consultants, and the Director of the Alaska Division of Insurance.
The panel will discuss questions such as, “What are the factors that have led to the volatility and price increases in the individual and small business markets?” “What are other states doing to address insurance costs that could work in Alaska?”
