October Program
Current Work of Thomas Phifer and Partners. Architect Thomas Phifer approaches modernism from a humanistic standpoint, connecting the built environment to the natural world with a heightened sense of openness and community spirit that is based on a collaborative, interdisciplinary process. “In all of our work, we seek a natural economy of elements through order grounded in nature and predicated on conservation. We shape the character of our architecture through passive solar and ventilation strategies; incorporating ancient and modern principles of air movement. We consciously aim for simplicity - in planning, our use of light and air, building organization and circulation - because it is our experience that simplicity leads to economy, efficiency, and improved performance.” Current work includes an expansion of the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, a new museum for the Glenstone Foundation in Potomac, Maryland, The Museum of Modern Art and TR Warszawa Theatre in Warsaw.

Thomas Phifer, FAIA, founded Thomas Phifer and Partners in 1997. His work includes the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, North Carolina, the United States Courthouse in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Raymond and Susan Brochstein Pavilion at Rice University in Houston, Texas, Lee Hall at Clemson University, and several private residences. Currently he is also teaching at Cornell University and the University of Southern California.

Thomas Phifer’s buildings have been repeatedly honored by the American Institute of Architects, including twelve AIA New York Honor Awards. Seven AIA National Honor Awards included the North Carolina Museum of Art in 2011 and the Raymond and Susan Brochstein Pavilion in 2010. He was awarded the 2004 Medal of Honor from the New York Chapter of the AIA. He was awarded the Rome Prize in 1996 from the American Academy in Rome, and in 2011 he was elected an Academician of the National Academy of Design. In 2013, Mr. Phifer received the Arts and Letters Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He received his Bachelor of Architecture in 1975 and his Master of Architecture in 1977 from Clemson University. A monograph on the work of Thomas Phifer and Partners was released in 2010 by Skira Rizzoli.
