Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum and the County of Allegheny will host a Civil War reenactment and living history weekend commemorating the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. The event will be held at Hartwood Acres on June 26, 27 and 28, 2015.
ABOUT "Passing of the Armies":
On April 9, 1865 the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, under the command of General Robert E. Lee, surrendered at Appomattox Virginia effectively ending the Civil War. Union Major General Joshua L. Chamberlain described the historic event in his 1915 memoirs titled “The Passing of Armies”;
"We Formed...to face the last line of battle, and receive the last remnant of the arms and colors of that great army which ours had been created to confront for all that death can do for life."
After the surrender Southern soldiers were paroled and simply went home. The majority of Union troops, however, were still under arms and made their way to Washington for formal dismissal from Federal service. A two day military parade through the streets of the capitol, the “Grand Review”, was held in late May as a final tribute to the victors. During the month of June the remaining Union army was mustered out of service, sending a flood of veterans home to begin new lives.
Our event, “The Passing of Armies”, will commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lee’s Surrender and the return of soldiers from both armies to their homes to begin the process of national healing.
Whether they fought for the North or South nearly 3 million Americans served in the Civil War. It is estimated 1,100,000 were casualties of war with 620,000 of those being recorded as died in service.
