Cost/Registration: 2 options

 $125 plus one-time $15 registration fee for 3-day certification from JPI.

You will need to apply  for admission to Lehman College first, one of the following ways:

A)   Submit the Visiting Student admission application along with the required supporting documentation. 

OR

What/Who?

Summer Jazz Arts Institute provides an ideal framework for teachers, arts specialists and teaching artists to build their knowledge and skill teaching jazz arts awakening deeper imagination, discipline, community and trust with their students. Participants will be immersed in activities and discussions around teaching jazz through multiple modalities of singing, dancing, theatre, writing and visual arts. Master Classes will be led by Summer Jazz Arts Institute faculty including:  James McBride, author/musician, Tom Dempsey(co-chair), musician/educator, Shireen Dickson(co-chair), choreographer/producer, Eli Yamin(Artistic Director), musician/educator, Stephanie Sertich, theatre artist/educator, and Antoinette Montague, musician/educator.

Participants will be from a wide range of experience in the field from college students who are relatively new to teaching artist work to experienced teachers and artists with a decade of experience. A safe and challenging learning environment will be created where breakthroughs will be made in understanding the jazz arts in a more comprehensive and dynamic way.

Learning Objectives:

1. Defining Jazz Power methodology, an experiential approach to jazz arts education that is cross modal, close proximity to lineage and culture, creativity, and collaboration.

2. Defining Jazz Power Tools: Personal Story, Making a soulful sound, Stomp/Clap, Shuffle, Swing, Polyrhythm, Syncopation, Improvisation on a theme, Call and response, Co-signing, Riffs, Re-harmonization

3. How to create lesson plans utilizing Jazz Power methodology addressing different populations such as elders, higher ed, middle, elementary and high school, special needs?

4. Knowing how to activate Jazz Power methodology in different spaces and subject areas such as: music, dance, theatre, writing classrooms, history, social studies, business, education, technology.

5. Artmaking: Participants collaborate to create a cross modal jazz work with tools learned at SJAI.
