Wednesdays, September 6, 13, 20, 27, 2017 7 to 10 p.m.
Cost: $145.00 for the four week session ($120 for the class and $25 for the model fee).
This is a class for intermediate to advanced portrait students who would like to further develop their painting skills. The emphasis will be placed on the following topics:
1. Colors: discover the power of color temperature, complimentary colors, contrast and many other concepts behind a compelling portrait painting. In particular, we will dissect the mystery of skin color and learn how to paint glowing, life-like skin.
2. Edges and Transitions: This is a very important topic that many artists overlook as they learn how to paint portraits. You will learn the techniques to transition one color into another in a fully controlled manner that will give your painting the loose, painterly quality that we see in the works of the masters.
3. Common Features: From the glistening, translucent eyeballs, the shiny, flowing hair to a realistic hand, you will learn the strategies to approach and refine these difficult yet important features in a portrait painting.
Students should bring paint (oil, acrylic or pastel), paint thinner, brushes, palette, rags or paper towels.
About the instructor
Jordan began studying portrait painting at the Art League School in the historic Alexandria, Virginia, under the tutelage of Washingtonian artist Kurt Schwarz and later Danni Dawson. Over the years, Jordan has developed a style that combines classical realism with intensely vibrant colors and broad, casual brushwork.
Portraits
Portraiture remains one of Jordan’s primary focuses as he searches relentlessly for more ways to capture the stories and emotions behind the faces. The subjects in his portraits often present the image of people in our everyday life as well as various cultures around the world. One of the most important aspects of his portrait and figure work is that he tries to describe the subjects in their “natural habitat”, where they are placed in their favorite environment or performing their favorite activity.
Landscapes
Jordan’s artworks often depict scenes and people he has seen or met during his travels as well as daily life experiences. Throughout his painting career, he passionately pursues the perfect depiction of a rich, diverse world, anywhere from the picturesque water alleys of Venice to the quiet wooded hills of New Hampshire. His love for the different cultures and their people is apparent in his works like the painting of the Egyptian man standing next to his camel or the Brazilian teenager trotting down the street on horseback.
Jordan now lives in Lovettsville, Virginia as a freelance artist.
