PHOTO COMPETITION

ArtSpace Herndon and the Council for the Arts of Herndon present
the fourth annual Herndon Town Calendar Photography Competition.
Professional and amateur photographers in high school and older are invited to submit entries to the competition; the deadline for submissions is June 10, 2014. Subjects for all entries must be located within the corporate limits of the Town of Herndon, and special consideration will be given to entries depicting people participating in seasonal or community events.
A select panel of jurors will evaluate photographs submitted to the competition and select the finalists. Finalists are invited to exhibit in ArtSpace Herndon’s Post Gallery. From the finalist photographs, the Town of Herndon selects photographs for the 2015 Herndon Town Calendar. Each year in December, more than 10,000 calendars are printed and distributed to all citizens and businesses throughout the town. In addition to the exhibit and publication in the calendar, finalist photographs are eligible to receive the Herndon Town Calendar People’s Choice Award, given to the photograph best representing Herndon.

Who May Enter
Professional and amateur photographers in High School and older. Photographers do not need to live in Herndon to participate.

There is no fee to enter the Herndon Town Calendar Photo Competition.
How to Enter
Registration information and images may be submitted online or by mail. All entries must be submitted/received by 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, 2014.
Go to www.ArtSpaceHerndon.org and click on the Calls for Art menu and scroll down to find the Herndon Town Calendar Photo Competition.
- Complete he entry form via online registration. Registration will be confirmed by email.
- Email images to exhibits@artspaceherndon.com with subject “Town Calendar Images.” Images will be matched with registrations, and entrants will be notified if their images have not been received.

Judging
A select panel of jurors will evaluate all photographs submitted to the competition. A panel of judges will select the finalist photographs to be exhibited in the Post Gallery at ArtSpace Herndon and eligible for selection by the Town for the 2015 Calendar. The decision of the judges is final.
Patrons to ArtSpace Herndon may vote for the People’s Choice Award from the time the exhibit opens until 1 hour after the artist reception begins. The winner will be announced during the reception.
Rights
By entering the Herndon Town Calendar Photo Competition, the entrant hereby grants to the Town of Herndon a nonexclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, and publicly display the photographs submitted to the Competition. The entrant also grants ArtSpace Herndon, the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts, the Council for the Arts of Herndon, and the Town of Herndon permission to use images for publicity purposes, including postcards and advertisements. The entrant retains all other rights to any photograph submitted, including ownership. All photographs used by ArtSpace Herndon, the Council for the Arts of Herndon, and the Town of Herndon will be credited with the caption "Photo Name by Photographer Name” whenever possible.
Agreement
By entering the competition, the photographer agrees to abide by all competition rules. If selected as a finalist, the photographer agrees to participate in the exhibit and meet the exhibit requirements. The photographer warrants and represents that s/he owns the copyright to the photographs submitted for this exhibit and that those works do not infringe the copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy or any other rights of any third parties or of any other person. The entrant also agrees to hold ArtSpace Herndon, the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts, the Council for the Arts of Herndon, the Town of Herndon, and their employees and volunteers harmless. Failure to comply with these rules constitutes withdrawal from the competition.
The photographers whose photographs are selected as finalists in the Herndon Town Calendar Photo Competition will be notified by email by June 17, 2014.
Photographs selected as finalists in the Competition will be exhibited in ArtSpace Herndon’s Post Gallery. Photographers are encouraged to offer their finalist photographs for sale during the exhibit at a price of their choosing. The People’s Choice Award will be announced at the reception. All entrants and finalists are encouraged to attend the reception. The finalists are encouraged to publicize the exhibit and the reception to their patrons, family, and friends.
Exhibition Requirements
Framing and Matting: Finalist photographs must be framed for the exhibit. The frames must be wired for hanging (no clips, screw-eyes, or saw-tooth hangers). Double-glass float-frames are not permitted. Wire should be mounted about 1/3 of the way down from the top edge of the artwork and tight across the back of the frame. Any photo offered for sale must be matted as well as framed. A general guideline is for the mat to be at least as wide as the frame,
Photo Size: The print size of photographs in the exhibit should be at least 8” x 10” and no larger than 20” x 30”. These sizes are for the images, the finished frame size can be larger.
Labeling: The photographer is responsible for labeling the framed photograph with the photographer’s name, the title, the location, and price. Please place this label on the back of the framed image.
Sale of Framed and Matted Photographs: All works featured in the exhibit will be available for sale at a price of the photographer’s choosing unless marked “Not for Sale” or “NFS.”
Delivery and pickup of Photographs.
Commission: ArtSpace Herndon will retain a commission of 25% for any artwork sold during the show.
Other: ArtSpace Herndon retains the right to disallow any artwork for which the entry image substantially misrepresents the actual artwork. Photographers whose finalist photographs sell during the exhibit agree to provide ArtSpace Herndon with their social security or employer identification number, if the total value of their sales is over $600.00. All photographers are encouraged to attend the reception on Saturday, July 26, 2014, 7 – 9 p.m. Photographs selected for the Town Calendar will be announced at the reception along with the People’s Choice Award. ArtSpace Herndon will make every effort to secure all artwork in the show. Artwork is exhibited at the photographer’s risk.
About ArtSpace Herndon
ArtSpace Herndon is a community performing arts center created by the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts that includes a 1,700 sq. ft art gallery and two classrooms for classes and small group sessions with artists. Exhibits in the Post Gallery change monthly and include regionally, nationally, and internationally known artists in a variety of mediums. Exhibiting artists are chosen from submissions to, or invited by, the Visual Arts Programming Committee. ArtSpace Herndon works with local artists to offer fine art classes to the public. A variety of events are offered regularly by the Performing Arts Programming Committee. The space is also available for rent by businesses and individuals for meetings and private parties. ArtSpace Herndon staff is assisted by volunteers and supported by grants and donations. ArtSpace Herndon is operated by the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts, as 501(c)3 organization.
About the Council for the Arts
The Council for the Arts of Herndon (CAH) is a non-profit 501c3 organization and is the official arts agency of the Town of Herndon. CAH is responsible for promoting the arts by producing many popular Herndon events, including Monthly Art Programs at Herndon Fortnightly Library, Children’s Hands on Art at the Herndon Festival, and the Technology & the Arts Competition. CAH also provides scholarships for area students interested in pursuing the study of art and gives grants to art groups in Herndon.
