Black and White

Digital Photography Workshops

Intermediate Level

Who is this workshop for?

The workshop is for those who want to deepen their vision and technique in black and white  photography. Instruction and guidance will be provided, however, this workshop requires some experience with Adobe Lightroom® and NIK Silver Efex®. Building artistic vision and compositional skills are high priorities in this session as are learning how to refine your images with the software. See contact info to the left if you'd like to call or email me to talk about the requirements or content.

All members of Spring 2013 workshops qualify and have first chance to register for the course.

Workshop description

After registration participants will be sent a document that contains three shooting assignment options from which they will choose one to complete before the session. A shooting guide is also included. You will then finish the assignment and bring 10 -15 images from it to the session on Oct. 19th. Alternately, you can bring 10-15 images from a series on which you are currently working or have already completed. This sequence needs to be thematic and cohesive - not a 'best of' collection.

There will be an introduction and a short talk, then our session will have an experiential emphasis aimed at refining your eye and your technique in B&W photography. Participants will edit a group of their own photos to choose the best images for B&W conversion. Then with Michael's guidance, as well as group discussion and feedback, they will work on polishing those images in Lightroom® and Silver Efex® The goal is to create a collection of 5-6 finished images.

Some topics we will cover

  • how to spot a good candidate for conversion to B&W
  • learn the visual building blocks for making strong B&W photographs
  • how to 'develop' a black and white image in the digital darkroom
  • tonal mapping and its uses
  • the fine art of split toning and when to use it
  • sharpening and softening
  • approaches to B/W workflow
  • exercises to develop 'seeing'
  • how to use software tools and visioning techniques to train our eyes to perceive and compose in B/W
  • using Lightroom and Silver Efex for maximum effect
  • thematic development
  • how to draw out sequences and series from a group of photographs
  • working with the aesthetic elements of B&W e.g. composition

Things you will need to bring

All participants need to bring a laptop computer, either Mac or PC, loaded with Lightroom, and NIK Silver Efex Pro 2. Free trial versions of these programs are available for download on Adobe's and NIK's website. You will need to bring at least 10 - 15 RAW or DNG files of your photographs on a USB key.  Please contact me if you have any questions about what you require to participate.
