Elul Workshop: Ani L'Dodi v'Dodi Li - Relationship Tending

Many of you have seen Rabbi Dan and Zoe lead Friday night services during the COVID-19 pandemic. They lead with a lot of love, joy and harmony, so grateful to have found one another at this time in their lives. Their story is a unique one, but so is yours. Just like you, they experience episodes of conflict and tension. Just like you, when they get triggered by seemingly unimportant things, they have questions of themselves and each other, such as: “Why do you care so much about how to organize the dishwasher?” Or, “Why do you always leave the toothpaste cap off the toothpaste?”

In any relationship, every one of us reacts in our own individual way to things that we find threatening, annoying or hurtful. What sets one person off may seem incomprehensible to another person, or, more commonly, one person’s reaction to an event may then set off a reaction in another person. How people react to the same triggering experiences (wildfires, pandemics, elections, anyone?) are bound to be very different.

In this high holiday workshop, “Ani L’Dodi v’Dodi Li: Elul Workshop for Relationship Tending,” Rabbi Dan and Zoe will share with you a framework for understanding defense mechanisms and learning to vote for connection instead of protection. Using simple exercises that Rabbi Dan has developed over time to work with couples, you will have an opportunity to look at your relationships (any kind of relationship) in a new light and perhaps shed some limiting defense mechanisms that are no longer serving you, in time for Rosh Hashanah!

In this workshop we will examine whether our defense mechanisms are serving us today in our relationships, or whether those “triggering” moments might be opportunities to open up and become more vulnerable rather than more defensive –with amazing results. Please join us!
