Melanie A. Prince, is the President, Case Management Society of America (2020 – 2022) and American Academy of Nursing Fellow. Cultural Competency is a lifelong educational and developmental endeavor influenced by social/societal change, population migration, cultural beliefs and emotional intelligence. This interactive presentation will include concepts, challenges to conventional wisdom and “points to ponder” as the audience charts their path toward a journey of cultural enlightenment that will advance professional practice.

• LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Utilize the principles of respect of patient rights, inherent dignity, objectivity as outlined in CCMC’s Code of Professional Conduct when encountering the ethical challenges faced by case managers when interacting with culturally diverse populations 2. Debate how societal trends, social change and population migration influences cultural “norms”, beliefs and health system interactions, including the current COVID-19 pandemic 3. Analyze unconscious bias and its impact on communication, goal setting and social determinants of health 4. Justify the need for systematic evaluation of a culturally competent professional health staff.

"Showing up for Clients" Supporitng Clients in Thier Vaccine Distrust"
Becky Reitzes, MA, King County Public Health
During the past several months, there has been a lot of discussion about “Vaccine Hesitancy” and the COVID-19 vaccine. Often these conversations ignore the complexity behind “vaccine hesitancy” and disregard the impact that historical and current trauma and oppression has on people’s vaccine decisions. This presentation will discuss vaccine hesitancy through a lens of historical and current trauma and injustices and increase skills for Medical Case Managers to support their clients in making informed decisions.
Becky Reitzes, MA,
is a Lead Trainer and Educator with Public Health–Seattle & King County (PHSKC) and has been with the County since 2001. Becky has been working on PHSKC’s COVID Community Mitigation Response since the beginning of the pandemic and is the Co-Lead, Program and Training Manager for King County’s COVID-19 Speakers’ Bureau. When not working on COVID-19, Becky provides training and technical assistance to healthcare providers, community agencies, school district staff and young people around many sexual health issues, including teaching comprehensive sexual health education, working respectfully with LGBTQ individuals, and sexual violence prevention. Becky is a co-author of the evidence-based FLASH curriculum, a widely used sexual health education curriculum, and the redesigned KNOW curriculum, Washington State’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction-published HIV prevention curriculum. Becky has over 20 years of experience in providing professional development technical assistance and trainings, conducting community outreach, developing curricula and culturally relevant materials, and educating young people.
