About This Presentation

Substance misuse, particularly alcohol misuse, is a risk factor for acquiring a brain injury, and a brain injury may be a risk factor for developing substance misuse. Almost two thirds of people who sustain a traumatic brain injury are intoxicated at the time of injury. This presentation will explore the relationship between substance misuse and ABI, challenges in providing rehabilitation to persons with ABI and co-occurring substance misuse, and limitations in traditional or 12-step approaches to substance misuse treatment in the ABI population.

OBJECTIVES

1.Define substance misuse. 2. Discuss the relationship between substance misuse (particularly alcohol) and acquired brain injury. 3. Discuss challenges in providing rehabilitation to persons with ABI and co-occurring substance misuse. 4. List problems with traditional or 12-step approaches with the ABI population. 5. Describe the Transtheoretical Model (aka – Stage Change) and evidence-based treatment techniques for addressing substance misuse. 6. Discuss and present data from a small pilot project. 7. Discuss Harm Reduction: Helpful strategies when people refuse to quit.
