Online registration is now closed. We will have a very limited number of admissions available at the event tomorrow morning. Please arrive by 9am to pay $20 (cash or check preferred) and select from the remaining workshops. The event will begin promptly at 9:30am.

 You are invited to attend the 6th Annual Marin Teen Girl Conference, sponsored by the Marin Women's Commission, to be held at the Marin Office of Education in San Rafael on Saturday, April 2, 2016, from 9:00am to 3:30pm.  The Marin Teen Girl Conference is for teen girls ONLY.  While we appreciate the interest of parents in attending, we want to give the girls a safe place to discuss their feelings.

 The conference will include morning entertainment, a motivational keynote speaker, three workshop sessions, and lunch. The day will conclude with a closing session planned by the Teen Girl Ambassadors.

The F word: What is Feminism and why do we still need it?

Presented by Novato Youth Center

Feminism, what is it and why do we still need it? This workshop explores definitions of feminism and allows attendees to define what it means for themselves. With the help of peer facilitators, we will watch video clips about gender roles and how the media defines what it means to be a woman in 2016. We will also discuss in small groups what we think women can be rather than what they should be, and why this is important even today.

 

Fight Back:  Preventing Sexual Assault with Self Defense

Presented by Community Violence Solutions

This is an interactive workshop to practice assertiveness with self defense training and an open discussion about sexual assault prevention and empowerment for teens as well as sexual exploitation awareness.

 

Fighting against Body Hatred: Learning to Love EVERY Body!

Presented by Beyond Hunger

Join us in tapping into our mighty power to fight back against the shaming negative media messages that teach us to hate our natural bodies. All of us DO have the power to take a stand and find a way to love and appreciate EVERY body, especially our own. We will identify what these messages are and explore ways to bring forth the super hero powers finding the incredible strength within . Each participant will have the opportunity to create a short video together of positive female super hero messages thus creating a tangible reward for themselves and others.

 

Fighting for Joy

Siobhan Nielland, founder of One Mama organization, which empowers Ugandan women and provides safe birthing facilities, discusses how her journey through loss to giving to others across the world brought her to joy.

 

Getting What You Want: A Communication Skill Set for Real Life

This dynamic, fun, engaging workshop is designed to teach young women some of the most effective tools for communication. Through interactive practice, we will focus on goals and best practices for how to speak with parents, friends and everyone else in between. This interactive workshop examines real life scenarios with an emphasis on active listening, clarification of goals, responding rather than reacting, open ended questions and more.

 

Hanging out or Hooking Up? Healthy Relationships and Recognizing Abuse

Presented by Center for Domestic Peace

Whether you are hanging out or hooking up, do you know whether you have a healthy relationship?  Learn to identify positive, safe relationships and identify the warning signs that a partner might be abusive, controlling, or stalking you. You will learn how to have a healthy relationship with boundaries, the realities of dating abuse, and how cyber stalking, digital abuse, and sexting affect you.

 

Image is Everything: Confessions of a Mean Girl

Georgia is a self-proclaimed mean girl. She pushes her friends, keeps the freshmen in line & rules on what's socially acceptable and what's not. She dates the right guy, wears the right clothes, and hangs out with the popular girls. However, when she finds herself in a violent relationship she doesn't know what to do or where to turn.

 

Ladies in Control: Safer Sex for Today's Teens  

Presented by Huckleberry Youth Programs

Okay, so maybe you know about safer sex or maybe it's all new and overwhelming. Either way, knowing how to take care of yourself--your body, heart, and mind--is the first step to being totally in control. Presented by experienced sex educators, this session will help you explore your values around your sexual decisions, understand and implement boundaries, discuss the meaning of healthy relationships, consent, respect and true intimacy. You'll learn what safer sex options are available to you, how to get them, and how to talk about them in a way that puts you in the driver's seat. This is a safe place to ask questions and learn how to make choices that are right for you!

 

Sexuality: Beyond the Rainbow

Every person has their own sense of gender identity, ways of expressing their gender and feelings about who they are attracted to. While these areas of a person’s life may influence each other, they are still distinctly different and dynamic- making up a unique sexual identity. Come explore these concepts in a fun and interactive way. We’ll be thinking about ourselves, hearing from our peers, and understanding allyship.

 

Show Off Your Superpowers!  

Presented by Aikido Kids of Tamalpais

In this hands-on, martial arts workshop, you will discover that everybody does indeed have superpowers.  Your body language can give you strength under pressure.  Understand how your basic postures affect others and what responses to expect from those postures.  Learn techniques to move through the world so that you get the responses you want.

This discussion will include a panel of speakers that will engage the audience, and explore fear, adversity, and the skills needed to be a master multitasker so you can create a life of balance and gratitude where your inner warrior can shine.
