2019 Theme: Timberland Investment in the Northern Forest: Activities and Implications.
This theme was developed from a variety of suggestions offered by NYSAF members over the last few months of meeting planning, and reflects the diversity in demands on our region's forests today. Things to be aware of:

Wednesday Workshops: Earn extra CFE credits! Pre-meeting workshops on Wednesday afternoon. From 1:00 pm-5:00 pm we will offer (Please Note: workshops run simultaneously so you may only register for one):

• THIS WORKSHOP HAS SOLD OUT. Current Topics in Invasive Forest Pest Monitoring and Management in NYS (3.0 CFE Credits); (Pesticide Applicator Credits TBD). -- Topics will include: Engaging with the Invasive Species Network in NYS to detect and manage forest pests; EAB-Resistant Native Ash Trees: Incorporating them into an overall ash conservation/EAB mitigation strategy; and An overview of Spotted Lanternfly and other priority forest pests in NYS. Presenters include Zachary Simek, Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program, The Nature Conservancy; Jonathan Rosenthal, Director, and Dr. Radka Wildova, Senior Scientist, Ecological Research Institute; as well as Justin Perry, Bureau Chief, and Jerry Carlson, Chief Research Scientist, Bureau of Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health, Division of Lands and Forests, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
• THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED. How to Make a Solid Presentation (CFE Credits TBD) -- presented by Jim and Carol Coufal. Most of you know Jim from being his student, colleague, his many presentations at NYSAF and as a friend. He has made presentations in 16 states and 4 countries, before audiences from 10 to 1,600. With Dr.s Joel Howard and Lee Herrington, he initiated and taught public speaking at ESF for 8 years and then at Cazenovia College. He's going to share his experience with you and you can grade him on how well he has followed the elements of public speaking over the years and in this presentation. By virtue of another part of our meeting Agenda, Jim has been labeled as part off the “old growth."

Wednesday Evening:  NYSAF Executive Committee Meeting from 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm.

Thursday-Friday Regular Meeting: The regular meeting will begin at 9:00 am on Thursday, January 24th with opening remarks and keynote address. General sessions, breakout (technical) sessions, and the annual Business Meeting will run through lunch on Friday January 25th.

Thursday evening events: Poster Session and Alumni Socials. Any individual interested in presenting a poster at the annual meeting should contact Chris Nowak at canowak@esf.edu 

Friday Afternoon Workshops: Earn extra CFE credits! There will be two post-meeting workshops taking place from 1:45-4:30 pm. (Please Note: workshops run simultaneously so you may only register for one): 

• Practical Ethics Workshop (3.5 CFE Credits) -- presented by Marianne Patinelli-Dubay. This workshop will introduce a variety of approaches to ethical problem solving. We will learn about six of the primary methods that we employ every day when faced with ethically weighted situations. 

• Northern Long Ear Bat Habitat/Roost Tree Training (3.5 CFE Credits) -- presented by Chris Tcimpidis, Forester and Wildlife Specialist, Bevan Forestry, Inc. This workshop will discuss the biology, female and male roosting habitat, male roosting habitat, trees used for roosting (species, DBH, condition), what makes a tree a roost tree, distribution of male and female population.
