Library Compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act Webcast

This is a pre-recorded, 45 minute webcast. With our online anytime format, you will immediately receive the link to the webcast, password and the link to the webcast handout upon successful registration. You do not need any special software to view and listen, just a computer!  Since passwords are changed frequently, we suggest viewing the webcast as soon as possible after registering.

Description:

As with most of the employment laws, there are specific supervisory responsibilities for which you are accountable. The Fair Labor Standards Act, passed in 1938, sets several key standards of work: minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and child labor standards. First and foremost is the classification of employee positions as exempt or non-exempt, which is fundamental to the FLSA because it sets the basis for compensation.

In this webcast, you will:

  • Learn about the FLSA and some of its key provisions
  • Define exempt and non-exempt classifications
  • Identify the types of exemptions
  • Review salary requirements for all exemptions
  • Distinguish hours worked by employees, including overtime and compensatory time
  • Understand requirements for recordkeeping, including timekeeping and records retention
  • Become informed about child labor provisions

Presenter: Tiffany Hentschel, SPHR, is the Employee Relations Manager for Johnson County Government.  She has worked in Human Resources in the public sector for over 15 years, serving more than nine years at the Johnson County Library.  Tiffany earned a Master's Degree in Human Resources Development and a Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources Management from Webster University.  She is a member of the MARC Government Training Institute Supervisory Certificate training team and also trains on a variety of HR topics.
