Make Your Library NOT the Best Kept Secret in Town Webcast

This is a 30 minute pre-recorded webcast. With our online anytime format, you will immediately receive the link to the webcast, password and the link to the webcast handout upon successful registration. You do not need any special software to view and listen, just a computer!  Since passwords are changed frequently, we suggest viewing the webcast as soon as possible after registering.

Description:

Complacency and smugness are the enemies of your library’s success. The fact that you have great programs, services, collections, and staffing and a long history of success does not mean your library customers will remember you tomorrow. The basics of promotion can keep your library in the spotlight as long as they are part of what you do every day.

Ten Steps:

  • Make marketing part of everyone’s duties.
  • I know you are broke. Nonetheless, find money for publicity.
  • Assume everyone is a first-timer to the library: print address, hours, and phone on everything.
  • Create and distribute inexpensive flyers, posters and brochures to schools, churches, youth centers, stores…and motels!
  • Make your library visible from the street.
  • Petition for community signs.
  • Petition for a billboard. Frequently, change the copy.
  • Pins and shirts – they work!
  • Create a presence outside of the physical library.
  • Seek out a service club partner: Optimists, Elks, Lions

Outcomes

  1. Design and produce a variety of print media to distribute and display in the larger community
  2. Recruit volunteers to distribute library flyers and help promote the library at community events.
  3. Ensure that listings in phone books, online directories, and databases are up-to-date and accurate.
  4. Create online store to sell and distribute shirts, bags, etc., with library logo.
  5. Change the type of events the library offers to attract different audiences.
