Designing a Roadmap to Staff Accountability Webcast

This is a 30 minute pre-recorded webcast. With our online anytime format, you will immediately receive the link to the webcast, password and the link to the webcast handout upon successful registration. You do not need any special software to view and listen, just a computer!  Since passwords are changed frequently, we suggest viewing the webcast as soon as possible after registering.

Description:

Accountability starts at the top with how leaders and managers model the attitude they expect from others. Is the strategic plan written so that new employees and part-timers understand its significance? And do the written expectations for each job and project reflect reality? Do employees have the tools and training to be successful?

Ten Steps:

  • Fix holes in the personnel system, like the obnoxious payroll clerk or the vague disciplinary policy.
  • First, hold managers and leaders accountable for their behavior.
  • Require successful supervisory training for every supervisor.
  • “’Norm’ the supervisors”: Consistent practices and policies throughout departments and buildings.
  • Once a year personnel meetings: Revisit laws and contracts.
  • Daily and weekly check-ins; interaction with staff is a priority.
  • Contracts, memos, and agreements need to be writing, not just talked about.
  • Set deadlines and concrete outcomes for real assignments, not just warm chats.
  • Document, document, document – the good and the bad.
  • No surprises: Prepare people for what is going to happen if disciplinary action and feedback is not taken to heart.

Outcomes

  1. Reduce negative emotionality around discussing goals and deadlines.
  2. Ensure employees have complete and correct information regarding personnel expectations.
  3. Establish guidelines for supervisors regarding documenting employee performance.
  4. Require weekly check-in meetings with all employees regarding productivity and civility.
  5. Establish universal timelines for implementing disciplinary actions.
